You have probably typed it somewhere. Into a search bar late at night. Maybe into one of those AI chatbots everyone is using.
How much do I need to retire?
And you got a number back. A big one. One million. Two million. Some article said three million is the new minimum, and you closed the laptop feeling a little further behind than when you started.
Here is what those articles never tell you. The number is the wrong question
A lump sum is easy to write and easy to fear. It makes a good headline. But it does not tell you the one thing you actually need to know, which is whether you can pay your bills every month for the rest of your life without running out.
Two people can retire with the exact same savings and have completely different retirements. One sleeps fine. One lies awake. The difference is not the size of the pile. It is whether that pile has been turned into something that pays them, month after month, no matter how long they live or what the market is doing that year.
Instead of asking, “How much do I need?” a better question is, “How much income will I need each month, and where will it come from?”
Start with your real life. What does it cost to be you each month? Your home. Your groceries. Your medications. The trips you actually want to take. Then look at the income that’s already coming in. Social Security. A pension, if you’re one of the lucky ones who still has one. Anything else you’ve put in place.
The difference between what you need each month and the income you can count on is the number that matters. Not the scary number in the headline. That number.
Here is the part the internet leaves out. A search engine or an AI tool does not know your numbers. It does not know your Social Security benefit, your health, your spouse, your tax picture, or how long the people in your family tend to live. So it hands you a generic figure built for a generic person who is not you.
It is a fine place to start.
One of the biggest questions we hear is, “Will I have enough?”
That’s why we don’t begin with charts or scary numbers. We begin by listening.
Together, we’ll look at what you already have, what you need each month, and how to create an income plan that helps support the retirement you’ve worked so hard for. Our goal is simple: to help you leave with more confidence than when you walked in.
The market will always have another headline. Our job is to help make sure your retirement isn’t driven by it. When you know where your income is coming from each month, it’s easier to turn off the news, stop worrying about your savings, and sleep well at night.
